well that was a good question. Yesterday for a french newspaper, I was asked: “if you can identify a percentage what would you give to the make up, the hair style and the styling to call a shooting well done?”
Well, I always said that every single day is a team work. It’s hard for me to give percentage for something I respect at the same level, without forgetting the location manager because the wrong location for the most stunning shooting can be a disaster. Also the casting manager, it’s not easy to find the right look and the perfect model for the shooting.
So, when it comes to the shooting day it’s a same level percentage to my eyes, all of them important.
But yes, I’ve been lucky enough in my career to work with make up artist or hair stylist getting $12,000 a day
or $80,000 for a full campaign and I must tell you… they really make the difference.
If you need make up or hair style as long as styling for the shooting, you always have to pretend the best in town.
A great shooting with a low level make up artist or hair stylist or stylist it’s going to be a disaster.
A phenomenal shooting with the wrong beautiful model, with no talent to be in front of a camera it’s such a disaster that is going to cost you a lot of money.
Of course I did that mistake in my past as every single photographer with no budget does in his/her career.
But that’s the biggest mistake a pro can make to get the best results.
Low level professionality is just bringing you down in this business.
